You’ve probably heard that laughter is the music of the soul and some of these clubs in Sydney will help you make a symphony. If you’ve never watched a stand up live, well, what are you waiting for? Check out some of these places and mark your calendar for a unique experience of food, drinks and laughter.
The Comedy Store
Address: 122 Lang Rd, Moore Park NSW 2021
The Comedy Store has been a home for laughs (not canned, thank goodness!) since 1981. Homegrown and international acts have been winning the not-so-faint hearts of patrons since then. Shows last for 90 minutes every Thursday and Friday from 8:30 pm, and Saturdays from 7:30 pm. There are back-to-back shows that feature up to eight comedians if you want a bit of variety.
The bar is open before the show and a special non-stop drink service is available during. You can keep your eyes on the stage and relax as your drinks are brought to your table. The bar also remains open after the performance.
The shows have adult themes and sometimes feature some pretty strong material, so anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, some individual shows can be strictly over 18’s, in which case minors won’t be permitted. For more information, visit their website http://www.comedystore.com.au.
Happy Endings Comedy Club
Address: 154 Brougham St, Potts Point NSW 2011
The club describes itself as smouldering and no, their air conditioning is not broken. They have won Sydney’s Best Comedy Venue from Time Out Comedy Awards back to back. You don’t just win an award without the chops to back it up. They have producers with 20+ years of experience that scour the country only to bring the best of the best in the club – and probably to also keep the awards coming.
Every Friday and Saturday night at 8:30 pm, you’re guaranteed to have an uproariously good start to the weekend watching five homegrown or international comedians grace the stage. The club has a vintage vibe that will remind you of the jazz clubs in New York. You have food choices like pizza and other dinner sets but you have to order it earlier, and you’re not allowed to bring it to the theatre. The bar is fully stocked so you can buy drinks anytime and you’re allowed to bring it downstairs and enjoy it with the comfortable seating and tables. Happy Endings Comedy Club tickets sell like hotcakes, so pre-booking is definitely advised. For more information, visit their website https://happyendingscomedyclub.com.au.
Sydney Comedy Club
Address: 1 Olympic Dr, Milsons Point NSW 2061
Passing by Luna Park’s big laughing face gave Darren Sanders the idea that the place needs a bit of a laugh. London and New York City have comedy shows left, right and centre and it was time for the North Shore to get a piece of the action. He opened the Sydney Comedy Club in January of 2017 in the basement venue of The Deck Restaurant.
According to Darren, comedy fodder is aplenty. He definitely has a lot to say about the matter having been previously involved in the Laugh Garage Comedy for 13 years. He also sees this as a chance to encourage youths of the area to take time away from the internet and see what live comedy has to offer.
Shows start on Saturdays from 8:00 pm with doors open 30 minutes before. Buying tickets online is cheaper – only $30 – $5 less compared with when you buy it at the door. Tickets that include dinner are $80.75 and the restaurant opens at 6:00 pm. For more information, visit their website http://www.sydneycomedyclub.com.au.
